Infopackets Reader Sam G. Writes:' Dear Dennis,My Windows Update won't update. It happened when I upgraded to Windows 8.1; I had over 100 updates to download. I managed to download most of them but there were a few that failed. Windows Update says the error code is on the.
I did a search for 8007045B in Google but the information is conflicting, confusing, and for the most part all the articles I've read go around in a loop. I also came across - but that didn't work, either. Apparently this has to do with the 'CBS Manifest' being corrupt, whatever that is.
Can you help? 'My response:Ah, the 'Windows Update won't update' error. This is a very common problem, as well as a frequently asked question. I did read the PC World article but, frankly it's an extremely shallow approach and won't resolve a deeply rooted problem when Windows Update is broken and has been broken for a long time.Update 20170609: I've also written an article entitled 'which is very much related to this article. If you already know for sure thatyour Windows Update is broken and you need to fix it - keep reading below. If you aren't sure if it's broken, please read the previous article first, thencome back to this one. I suggest you bookmark this page now so you can come backto it at any time.
To do so, press CTRL + D on your browser right now. In addition to the excellent guidance Dennis proffers here, I've often found that installing just a few Windows updates at a time works. When there are scores of updates to install at once, the update process sometimes just sort of chokes when one update won't install. So sometimes it might be worthwhile to try selecting just one or a few updates at a time and see if that gets you anywhere.
It's a bit of a pain in the butt, but this approach has often worked on our computers and those of clients. or to post comments. I did everything in the article, including going back through steps 3-5 again, all to no avail on a Windows 7 laptop. Then went through the steps referenced in PC Magazine or whatever. Still no updates. Back to your article, where I found the link to the Microsoft article which warns that normal humans are NOT to attempt this - it is for IT professionals only.
Driver Updates On This Computer
Screw that, I said, throwing caution to the wind. After going through all that and STILL no updates, I went back through your steps 3-5 yet again, set the updates to automatic, and left for work. When I came back, it was ready to reboot and install 64 updates. I am so excited I could hug you but that would be weird.Anyhow, in the amount of time that this took (an entire 8 hour day and 3 hours of another), a reasonably competent mechanic could have replaced the engine in my car. Why on earth does this have to be so dang hard???Next time this problem crops up, I'm going to install Linux.
I think I could figure out how to work that OS faster than going through all these steps again. Thanks very much for the article; couldn't have done it without you!. or to post comments.

It’s time to go back to the tried-and-true methods, the tricks that have been solving update errors since the update was first invented.
Here are a few options that may work for you. Reboot your computerThis is a surprisingly effective method that will solve a host of computer issues — and it often works for Windows Update. When you encounter an error message, reboot your machine and try to run the updates again. If you haven’t run Windows Update for some time, then you might have to repeat this process several times before all updates have been installed. Do you have enough disk space? One scenario in which updates may fail is when your system drive is running out of space.
Double-check that you have at least 10GB of free space. If you don’t, perform a disk cleanup to remove files. Afterward, specify the type of files that you want to get rid of and select OK. I bought my HP Pavilion laptop in July 2013. It is running Windows 7 Home Edition and seems to be running very well, except for the behavior of Windows Updates. My “problem” is that I'm not sure whether its behavior really is a problem.Quite often while it is shutting down, a warning message appears in a very pretty light blue screen. The message reads 'Please do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing update 1 of n.' The “n” may vary from 2 or 3, to 11 or 12.When I later restart the computer and click on 'Start-All Programs-Windows Update-View update history', a Control Panel window opens and displays a long list of installed updates. The “Status” column for most of them reads “Successful”.
(see attached image #1 'view update history.jpg')But if I click the Control Panel link to 'See also-Installed Updates', it reports 'No updates are installed on this computer.' (see attached image #2 'No updates are installed.jpg')Recently when I clicked on a small popup which said something like 'Click here to install updates', the Windows Update pane of the Control Panel opened and displayed the message 'Windows could not search for new updates / An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer. / Error(s) found: / Code 80080005 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.'

(see attached image #3 'error code 80080005.jpg').This behavior has been repeated many times since I bought this computer.Have you any suggestions regarding what is happening on my computer with respect to Windows Update?Thank you,Ron.
Patches Should Be Installed as Soon As PossibleYou often need to patch security problems as soon as possible to fix whatever the problem is. After a patch is released, the security hole becomes public knowledge if it wasn’t already. Attackers now know the problem and can rush to start exploiting it as soon as possible before people update. Attackers know business and home users are often slow to update, and they can wreak some havoc in the time before people patch.Just selecting “manually install updates” and installing updates when you remember to do so isn’t really good enough. You want Windows Update to install those updates for you automatically. For software like your web browser and browser plug-ins, you also want to leave automatic updates enabled — thankfully, that’s the default these days.
If you disable automatic updates for Firefox, Flash, Adobe Reader, or other important software, you should go turn them back on right now. It’s Not As Annoying As You ThinkAutomatic updates get a bad rap. In Windows XP and Windows Vista, your computer might automatically install updates while you get up for a coffee break and have rebooted itself by the time you get back.
You could lose all your work if you weren’t there to stop the 10-minute automatic reboot countdown. This led to many people disabling those automatic updates. But Windows has improved since then.

Windows 7 and 8 are configured to install updates at more convenient times, often when you reboot or shut down your PC if possible. On Windows 8 and 8.1, there’s a much longer grace period — you see a “you recently updated, so you need to reboot your PC” message, but your computer will wait three entire days before rebooting on its own. You’ll have plenty of time to restart on your own terms without losing your work. That’s right: You don’t have to click a button every four hours to postpone the reboot.
You can actually use your computer without being harassed! If only Windows 8 and 8.1 didn’t have so many other problems that are making people cling to Windows 7.This Registry Hack Prevents Automatic RebootsRELATED:If you’d like to avoid the automatic reboots entirely, you can. A registry hack allows you to. You can then enable automatic updates and get on with your life, secure in the knowledge that your computer won’t automatically reboot itself when you step away. The registry hack flips on Professional and Enterprise editions of Windows.Big Problems Are RareSome people are scared to install updates because of potential system problems, fromand corrupted Windows installations to various other issues. And, indeed,.Such problems have been very rare. This year, there was that caused blue screens of death on some PCs.
Aside from that, we’ve seen a few botched updates but no updates that led to blue screens like that. In some cases, driver updates have broken some drivers. In 2009, made some computers unbootable, but that only affected computers running that particular antivirus — one we wouldn’t necessarily recommend.RELATED:Exactly how many computers were affected by these problems? We don’t have any good data that tells us this, but it’s a minuscule percentage of people. On the other hand, there are millions and millions of computers that are part of, often because they refused to install security updates and ended up infected. Some people have that 500 million computers each year become part of botnets. Far, far fewer computers than that experience problems with updates.Spend any time at all on the Internet and you’ll realize that malware is a much bigger problem than Windows Update breaking computers.
One is very rare — and can be if it ever happens — while one is much more common and can result in the theft of your important data.Optional Updates Are OptionalYou’re free to ignore optional updates for a while, if you like. You can choose what you want to do with optional updates in your Windows Update settings, and you could have Windows only install critical security updates. You could then install optional updates on your own schedule. If you’re really worried, this would reduce the amount of potential update problems you experience while ensuring you get the critical security updates you need.To do this, visit the Windows Update settings in the Control Panel and uncheck the “Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates” checkbox.Even if you consider yourself an advanced Windows geek who knows what you’re doing, this is especially critical if you’re setting up someone else’s computer. They should be getting Windows Updates automatically so they don’t end up ignoring the notification and never installing updates. If you instantly install the updates every time you see them, you technically don’t need to do this. But, if you’re instantly installing the updates, why not just have them installed automatically?
If the reason is to avoid reboots, Windows 8 is better about this and all versions of Windows allow you to avoid that annoying reboot with a single registry hack. Windows will also allow you to install updates while restarting or shutting down your computer, so Windows respects your time much more than it used to. Automatic updates are critical for Windows users.
